I will start with a definition of the populations we will be discussing. Disability in this talk refers to impairments in motor, sensory, social, communicative, cognitive, emotional spheres. The term Children with healthcare needs is a broader group that has some of the same risks for child maltreatment as children with disabilities but also have chronic medical needs that require more healthcare than typically developing children. Disabilities are common, from 2019-2021 the prevalence of children diagnosed with a disability in the U.S increased from 7.4 to 8.6%. The most common disabilities in children are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
