Medical Photography: Tips
- Ensure adequate lighting
- Familiarize yourself with the equipment
- Make sure your background is neutral
- Take a picture of the face to identify the patient
- Take a picture with the patient identifiers (i.e., name, medical record number, etc.)
- Take a picture that includes anatomical landmarks and one with only the lesion(s) of interest
- Use magnification to take the picture
- Take the picture in the orientation that one would normally look at the area
- Use video than taking multiple pictures, if possible

When using medical photography to support our written documentation, we can optimize the image by doing the following: Ensure there's adequate lighting Familiarizing yourself with the equipment Make sure your background is neutral Take a picture of the face to identify the patient Take a picture with the patient identifiers, such as the name, medical record number, date of birth, etc. Take a picture that includes anatomical landmarks and one with only the lesions of interest Use magnification to take the picture, as needed Take the picture in the orientation that one would normally look at that area of the body And use video when taking multiple pictures, if possible, to help facilitate the process
