Facilitating Interdisciplinary Communication With an Impact Statement

An impact statement is a summary of your clinical decision making that can

  • be used as a means of communication with other child protection professionals (i.e., child welfare workers, law enforcement, legal, etc.)
  • provide an opportunity for deliberation and capitalizing on teachable moments as it relates to each case for other child protection specialists
  • outline your use of an evidence-based approach using research in the field of Child Abuse Pediatrics
  • allow time to reflect on your perspective and discuss how you derived your disposition to uncover if/when/how biases may be impacting the decisions made in the case

With our documentation and photography completed, the next step is sharing what we've learned with our interprofessional team members. An impact statement can be instrumental in these communications. It is a summary of your clinical decision-making that can be used as a means of communication with other child protection professionals, such as child welfare workers, law enforcement, or legal. It can provide an opportunity for deliberation and capitalizing on teachable moments as it relates to each case for other child protection specialists. It outlines your use of evidence-based approach using research in the field of child abuse pediatrics. And it allows time to reflect on your perspective and discuss how you've derived your disposition to uncover if, when, or how biases may be impacting the decisions made in the case.
